Inspired by the celebrated fifteenth-century Russian Orthodox icon of The Miracle of Saint George and the Dragon, this hand-written icon pays tribute to one of the most recognisable images in Orthodox Christian art.
The original icon, created by the renowned Novgorod School of Iconography, is preserved in the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg. Its powerful composition has influenced Orthodox iconography throughout Eastern Europe and has also inspired Christian art in the West, where Saint George has long been honoured as a symbol of courage, faith and spiritual victory.
Rich in symbolism, the icon portrays Saint George mounted on a white horse, representing purity, heavenly light and triumph over darkness. Beneath the horse, the defeated dragon symbolises evil, paganism and moral chaos overcome through faith. In the upper right corner, the hand of God extends from heaven, blessing Saint George’s victory, while the deep red background reflects the traditional Novgorod use of colour to signify martyrdom and sacrifice.
Written by Vio Vlad on a carefully prepared wooden panel, this icon seeks to preserve the spiritual depth and distinctive style of the original masterpiece. The panel is reinforced with traditional cross-bracing for long-term stability before being protected with varnish and polished with natural beeswax.
Each icon is individually signed and dated by the artist on the reverse.
