Inspired by a fifteenth-century Greek Orthodox icon located in the Cemetery Chapel of Saint Nicholas in Lemythou, Cyprus, this hand-written icon honours one of the great masterpieces of Orthodox sacred art.
For centuries, this remarkable image has influenced iconographers throughout Greece, Eastern Europe and Russia, inspiring countless interpretations while remaining faithful to the traditions of Orthodox iconography.
Written by Vio Vlad on a carefully prepared wooden panel, this icon seeks to preserve the character and spiritual depth of the original rather than create a modern reproduction. Subtle ageing techniques using acrylic paint give the work the quiet mystery and timeless appearance of an historic icon, favouring reverence over brilliance.
The solid wooden panel is traditionally framed and cross-braced to minimise movement and help prevent warping or cracking over time. It is finished with protective varnish and polished with natural beeswax.
Each icon is individually signed and dated by the artist on the reverse.
