Mother of God (Theotokos)

£1,475.00

Hand-written Orthodox icon of the Mother of God and the Christ Child, inspired by the work of the renowned Romanian iconographer Simeon Silaghi Zugravu (18th–19th century). Created on a traditionally prepared wooden panel, finished with varnish and natural beeswax.

Dimensions: 470 × 340 × 30 mm

Inspired by the work of the celebrated Romanian iconographer and mural painter Simeon Silaghi Zugravu, this hand-written icon honours one of the most distinctive artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Working for more than sixty years, Zugravu became known for decorating churches with murals and creating icons on wooden panels. His work is recognised for its expressive simplicity, naïve anatomical forms and restrained yet memorable use of colour, making his style instantly recognisable within Romanian Orthodox art.

This icon depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, a traditional Orthodox representation of the Theotokos (Mother of God). Christ raises His right hand in blessing while the Virgin gently presents Him to the faithful.

In the upper corners, the Archangels Michael and Gabriel stand on either side of the central figures. Their presence recalls the traditional composition of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where the heavenly messengers witness the sacred mystery of the Incarnation and foreshadow Christ’s Passion.

Written by Vio Vlad on a carefully prepared wooden panel, the icon follows the spirit of the original while remaining faithful to the traditions of Orthodox iconography. The panel is reinforced with a strong wooden frame before being protected with varnish and polished with natural beeswax.

Each icon is individually signed and dated by the artist on the reverse.
